Degree of reaction/conversion
With Fourier-Transform InfraRed spectroscopy, the presence of various functional groups such as C-H, C=C, C=O, O-H, N-H,... can be identified. When a chemical reaction takes place, for example crosslinking, oxidation or degradation, certain peaks may disappear and appear. Tracking these changes as a function of time, temperature,... allows the determination of the degree and even the kinetics of the ongoing chemical reaction.
